  There are two types of gear shaping machines: discrete and horizontal, with the former being the most commonly used. There are two types of vertical gear hobbing machines: cutting tool and workpiece. High speed and large gear hobbing machines use cutting tools for cutting, while small and medium-sized gear hobbing machines generally use workpieces for cutting. On a vertical gear shaping machine, the gear shaping cutter is mounted on the tool spindle and performs both rotational and reciprocating cutting movements. The workpiece is mounted on a worktable and performs rotational motion, and the worktable (or tool holder) can move laterally to achieve radial cutting motion. When the tool returns, the tool holder swings back slightly to allow the tool to move or the workbench to allow the tool to move. When machining helical gears, the gear cutter is subjected to additional rotation with the up and down movement through the accessory (spiral guide rail) installed on the spindle. In the 1960s, high-speed gear hobbing machines emerged, mainly characterized by the use of hard alloy gear hobbing cutters, with a spindle stroke of up to 2000 times/minute; the use of static pressure bearings and static pressure sliders; the use of tool holders to swing the tool to reduce impact. The horizontal gear hobbing machine has two independent tool spindles arranged horizontally in alternating reciprocating motion, mainly used for machining herringbone gears without empty tool slots and various shaft gears. In addition, there is a gear shaping machine that uses a comb cutter. During operation, the comb cutter performs reciprocating cutting motion and letting the cutter move, and the workpiece rotates accordingly and moves in a straight line parallel to the pitch line of the comb cutter. The two form a generative motion, and the meshing of the workpiece is intermittent.
