Honing is currently the main method for high-precision machining of hard tooth gears; However, it is quite difficult to improve the honing accuracy to level 6. 

At present, some domestic factories have produced 6-level precision gears.

German factories also use honing to produce 6-level precision gears, using coarse and fine rolling twice, and shaving with shaping cutters. 

They strictly control heat treatment deformation and other measures to ensure pre honing accuracy, and use shaping honing wheels for honing.

The disc-shaped honing wheel used in the ordinary honing process has high machining efficiency, and can process one gear in 1-2 minutes. 

In recent years, Japan has proposed a new gear honing method - worm gear honing technology, and launched a new type of worm gear honing machine.

The working principle of worm gear honing is to use a worm shaped honing wheel to perform honing on the gear tooth surface. Compared with the pre honing accuracy, it can improve the accuracy by 1-2 levels.

At present, more than ten patents for worm gear honing technology have been published in countries such as Japan, the United States,

 the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, mostly used in the manufacturing of automotive transmission gears. In recent years, there have been many studies on the organization of worm gear honing technology in China,

Worm gear honing machines have been produced by Nanjing Second Machine Tool Factory and Changjiang Machine Tool Factory, and have begun to be applied in production.

 The accuracy can reach 6-7 levels, and the average production speed is 3-6 minutes per piece.

Generally, worm honing wheels use ordinary abrasives and are divided into two types: soft honing and hard honing. 

In recent years, experimental research has adopted the honing process of electroplated diamond worm honing wheels and electroplated CBN (cubic boron nitride) worm honing wheels.
