The main types of motion of gear hobbing machines are as follows:

Cutting motion: The reciprocating motion of the gear shaping cutter up and down.

Splitting and generating motion: The correct meshing relationship should be maintained between the gear cutter and the workpiece. The hobbing cutter reciprocates once, and the arc length of the workpiece relative to the tool rotating on the indexing circle is the circumferential feed rate during machining. Therefore, the meshing process between the tool and the workpiece is also the circumferential feed process.

Radial feed motion: When slotting, in order to gradually cut to the full tooth depth, the slotting cutter should have a radial feed rate fr.

Let the cutter move: When the gear cutter moves up and down in a reciprocating motion, the downward direction is the cutting stroke. In order to prevent the tool from scratching the machined tooth surface and reduce the wear of the tool teeth, the worktable drives the workpiece to exit the cutting area for a certain distance (radial) when the gear cutter moves upwards.

Forward motion: The main function is to move the gear cutter forward in the tooth groove of the gear, making it move forward along the direction of the tooth groove, and processing the tooth groove into the desired shape and size.

Return motion: The main function is to retract the gear cutter from the tooth groove, causing it to retract to the surface of the gear and prepare for the next machining.

Rotating motion: The main function is to rotate the gear for the next slot machining, causing the gear to rotate along its gear axis direction, aligning the next slot with the gear cutter.

Feed motion: The main function is to move forward while rotating, in order to machine the tooth groove, so that the gear cutter moves forward along the gear shaft, and at the same time, complete the machining of the tooth groove.
